together with another 25 voting members of
the club.
The
meeting was called to discuss a proposal put to the members of
the Club by Ian Hotchkiss and three amendments to that proposal,
the subject being increases in Membership Fees for the Club’s
coming financial year.
This was
not a proposal which had been proposed and seconded or had six
members’ names appended to it - it was something that Ian drew
the Committee’s attention to as a starting point for discussion.
The
amendments were from Richard Hickling, Howard East and the
Executive Committee (see attached).
The
Executive Committee’s amendment was considered first as it was
the result of collective discussion and agreement by the members
of the committee. When this was voted on it was rejected by 17
to 11 votes, with some abstentions.
Everyone
agreed that Ian’s proposal identified three areas which many
thought to be important to the survival and growth of the club,
namely that:
- a sailing levy
should be charged to all sailors
- all fees should to
be for individuals with no ‘and partner’ rates
- there should be no
reductions for those of pensionable age.
However,
the fees were deemed to be too low to constitute a viable fee
structure. If this framework were to be adopted at any time in
the future it would need to be reworked. It was felt that this
was probably the way to go forward in future discussions.
During
discussions it was pointed out by both Andy Willcox and Colin
Beech that our membership fees were well below any sailing club
in the Bristol area.
In the
meantime, Richard Hickling’s amendment was voted on. After some
discussion and some alteration to figures it succeeded in
winning the vote by 15 votes to 11.
There
was a degree of disquiet from some who had not voted, presumably
in the hope of voting on Ian’s proposal when it came up. For
them, it was unfortunate that Richard’s amendment was voted in,
which closed the door to any further discussion.
The meeting ended at
09:40.
